Key Stage 2 - Year 3

Year 3 girls in costume during the Bede's World tripIn Year 3, we promote the development of independence and responsibility as the girls make the transition from Key Stage One. For example, they are encouraged to enter the building unaccompanied and organise their own belongings at the start of the day and they are allowed to make their own choices (under supervision) of the food that they eat at lunchtime.

Year 3 provides the girls with their first experience of several aspects of Key Stage Two, including the longer school day, the House system, extra curricular clubs, weekly swimming lessons and homework.

The year is a varied one in terms of its academic coverage. Literacy topics include Traditional Tales, which culminates in every girl writing her own version of the Cinderella story. Art work includes a topic all about pattern, which is enriched by a trip to Durham Cathedral to study and sketch the patterns in the architecture and decoration. Our main geography topic involves a study of weather and climate and includes the production of a project about a favourite holiday destination. History focuses on two very different periods and places - Ancient Egypt and Victorian Britain - and these provide the background for day trips to the Hancock Museum and Cragside.

Overall, Year 3 is an exciting, busy and important year in a girl’s career at the High School.
