GCSE Latin is an exciting and demanding course. Language skills, which can do so much to aid the effective study of other foreign languages, are practised and perfected. For the first time pupils read “real” Latin and it is an astonishing thrill for them to find they have the ability to understand texts which were written two thousand years ago and to trace the impact they have had, and are still having, on our own culture.
Results are excellent with over half the GCSE class regularly achieving A* and almost all an A grade. In 2006, one pupil was ranked in the top five of GCSE results nationally. As part of a portfolio of subjects, Latin stands as proof of a girl’s ability to think and since it is not, unfortunately, available to all, can provide a means of differentiating for university admissions tutors.
GCSE Latin groups are always happy and fulfilling. There are many opportunities to explore the subject beyond the classroom in trips, residential and local, in contact with other classicists, older and younger, in clubs and extra-curricular activities. Our constant aim is for girls, on completion of the course, to be convinced of its value and delighted that they undertook its challenge.
