All girls begin their study of Latin in Year 7 using the Cambridge Latin Course. They learn the basics of a language from which French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian all derive. They study the effect of Latin on our own vocabulary and can do much to improve their spelling and appreciation of English.
At the same time they begin to gain some insight into the Ancient World. They study life in Pompeii as an accessible model for Roman society and which they will have the opportunity to visit at some point in their course.
We use differentiated material produced by staff to ensure the progress of the individual pupil, depending on her needs, and to cope effectively with all levels of ability. Any girl who joins the school mid-course is helped to catch up both during lessons and at a Latin catch-up club, useful for both newcomers and anyone having a particular difficulty - or just for fun.
