PERFORMING RIGHTS!

We are really proud of our new performing arts suite and the enthusiastic response by our many ‘drama queens’ to our recent initiatives, which exploit the amazing facilities the studio offers. We really appreciated its floor space which is exactly the measurements of the Gala stage, making it so much easier to move the July ‘Millie’ production to the theatre. We all knew what to expect, especially in those amazing dance routines. ‘West Side Story’, to be performed towards the end of March promises to be another perfect example of our high standards of performance.

As the newsletter goes to press, we are working on our fourth play in our season of modern female playwrights the thought-provoking yet humorous play, ‘Our Country’s Good’ by Timberlake Wertenbaker to be performed in the studio in December. Y7 and Y8 will begin rehearsals for the middle school play after Christmas, which will be the comedy, ‘The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew’ by Robert Bolt. We are always lucky enough to have a production baby on set to inspire us, so we hope to welcome little Freya Hawkins to our weekend rehearsals this year!

We are all delighted by our new rehearsal strip of stylish hooded tops, T-shirts and trousers, designed by the girls.

This term has seen several exciting trips to the theatre – ‘Blood Brothers’, ‘Flashdance, ‘Our Country’s Good’ and ‘Lion King’. Y9 drama was the first group to participate in a new venture between the Gala and local schools where they were able to work on a scene from ‘Chess’, as well as experience a revolving stage, lighting, sound and costume. They then saw their scene that night in an excellent performance of the musical performed by the Gala Stage School. Many said the trip had certainly encouraged then to become more involved in the many performing arts activities we now have on offer throughout the school.
