The school Amnesty group engages in a number of activities to promote awareness of the abuse of human rights across the world. Recent examples include several letter-writing campaigns, either to Heads of Government or to individual victims. These take place in the Library and are usually well attended. Pupils have sketched pencil portraits to denounce the arms trade, bought Amnesty badges to support Amnesty’s work, signed Christmas cards for victims of abuse in Eastern Europe and created banners of support to human rights groups in Zimbabwe.
The group raises funds for stationary and postage by holding regular cake or sweet sales. These too are well attended !

To generate interest and support in school the group prepares and presents assemblies. The plight of particular individuals may be explained or the latest Amnesty campaign is highlighted.
Pupils from Years 10 to years 13 have been members of Amnesty over the years and their commitment to its objectives is always impressive.
In November 2007 the group will be presenting an Information Stall in the Library for three days, in order to raise the profile of the latest campaigns. In 2008 we will be contributing to efforts to improve the quality of human rights in China. The Beijing Olympic Games will prompt a renewed focus on this important issue.
