When can I start drama? There is curriculum drama in Years 7 and 8 plus a production for all. What can I do in Year 9 AND 10? Optional curriculum drama in Years 9. We tour local primary schools with a pantomime written by the students, reinforcing a health issue. We work in partnership with Durham City Health and Environment.

I love acting and would like to broaden my theatrical horizons.

Older talented students who wish to learn new skills take responsibility in school productions: directing, costume and set production, lighting, sound, film and choreography. We are often offered chances to audition for films and shows and our students are very successful in their applications to leading drama schools.

Is there a Senior Production?

We are the only school in the area to perform annually in the Gala Theatre where every aspect of the show is in the hands of our students. There are also several opportunities for straight acting in our new studio!

What will I gain from taking part in drama?

Self-confidence, creativity, team building and presentational skills, opportunities to act, dance and sing - plus lifelong friendships with fellow students throughout the school.

How does the school promote performing arts?

We work with other departments, especially music. We create theatrical effects through ICT and have even tried filmmaking! Several students have been in the National Youth Theatre.

Do you offer scholarships in performing arts?

There are both scholarships and exhibitions available at 11+, 12-14+ and for Sixth Form.

What productions have you done recently?

The Wizard of Oz, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Tempest, The Sound of Music, The Canterbury Tales, The Secret Garden, The Silver Sword and pantomimes– and that is just in the last three years!
