Year 7 Science Club

The Science Department offers a range of extra-curricular activities, which include trips for all year groups, competitions and special events for science week. Students have travelled to London to hear Lord Robert Winston, visited the Black Sheep Brewery and the Wensleydale creamery. For two years running GCSE students won first prize in a National Microbiology competition. Last year a team of five students from Years 7 to 9 won a Futures Competition, designing accommodation for survival on the moon.

Students have entered Science quizzes and taken part in the annual Paperclip Competition. We visit The Centre for Life, Castle Eden Walkway and Planetarium and many more exciting places. A group of A-level students recently took part in an exciting programme called Next Generation Science, travelling on an exchange to the Netherlands.

Year 7 Science Club

Pupils carry out a range of experiments involving all three sciences. Some examples of past experiments are ‘Fizzing Rockets’, ‘Edible DNA’ and ‘Painting with Pendulous Dogs’!

Senior Science Club

Year 10 scientists meet weekly to carry out fun experiments such as cloning, making a DNA necklace, making stained glass and developing photographs.

Senior Science Discussion Group

Sixth Form scientists meet weekly to discuss current issues in science. Able Year 11 students are also invited to attend.

Science Sparks

Science Sparks is a club for Gifted and Talented Year 6 pupils from our junior school and local primary schools. Each programme lasts for a term and pupils are involved in a range of activities, from Fire-writing, Chemiluminescence and making Foaming Fire Extinguishers to talks on Astronomy and a visit to Durham university to look at their telescopes.
