All girls are taught for 5 (35 minute) lessons per week, organised as 3 singles and 1 double period in Year 7 and 8, moving to 2 doubles and 1 single in Year 9. Girls are broadly set on entry based upon the entrance test but follow a common curriculum for the first half-term. In October, the sets are revised based upon the previous half-terms work. However, the Department recognises that girls develop their mathematical ability at different rates and so sets are regularly reviewed and changes made where appropriate. Depending on numbers, there are three or four ability sets in each Year Group, with the lower sets containing smaller numbers of girls.
Mathematics is taught with flair and enthusiasm to encourage interest and participation. Our purpose built classrooms are all equipped with data projectors enabling the Department to utilise a wide range of software to enhance traditional concepts. In addition the Department has access to a bank of laptops which are regularly used in lessons for both group and individual work. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and regularly discuss and present their mathematics to the whole class.
Each year the most able girls are entered for the National Mathematics Challenge where typically 60% - 70% of them are awarded certificates, well above the National Average of 40%. Those receiving a Gold certificate are automatically entered into the Schools Gifted and Talented program. In addition to the National Mathematics Challenges, many girls enter other competitions with a strong mathematical content. Recently a group of 4 girls qualified for the regional final of the IFS Student Investor Challenge 2008.
