OPENING CELEBRATIONS FOR OUR NEW
WENDY CRAIG PERFORMING ARTS SUITE
We were delighted to welcome back ‘Old Girl’ Wendy Craig, one of Britain’s most popular actresses, to open our splendid new performing arts suite on 13 October 2007.
‘JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT’
In an exciting new venture, 60 year five girls from DHS and 6 other local primary schools worked together for 2 days of intensive rehearsals in our wonderful new performing arts studio, to prepare a full production of the perennially popular musical ‘Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat’, which we performed to a completely full house at Durham’s Gala Theatre on Monday 14 January. The eight soloists were all performing arts students from our year 8. Joseph was played by one of our year 7 performing arts scholars, who has just finished a run of performances as Jane Banks in the West End production of ‘Mary Poppins’.
ROTARY CLUB CONCERT
Congratulations to 5 of our musicians (2 singers, 2 pianists and a violinist) who gave excellent performances at the Rotary Clubs of the North East Young Musicians Celebration Concert in the Customs House, South Shields on Saturday 2 February.
CHAMBER CHOIR EVENSONG IN DURHAM CATHEDRAL
Chamber choir sang choral Evensong in the Cathedral on Monday 10 March. Their beautiful singing and the calm ambience of the cathedral as darkness fell combined to create a serene and uplifting experience for the singers and congregation. We will sing Evensong again on 9 March 2009.
TALENTSTAR 2008
Talentstar is the north-east’s biggest annual competition for singers, instrumentalists and dancers, and provides three musical highlights during the spring and summer terms. We began in 2008 with our 1st round heat in school in March, in which 18 acts competed, of whom 7 won places to compete in the area semi-final. After some excellent performances in the semi-final in Stanley in May, 2 acts from DHS (a vocal group and a solo singer) were chosen to go through to the grand final on Saturday 28 June in Newcastle City Hall
