Examination Board: Edexcel
The examination will consist of two papers:
Paper 1: Written Paper: 1 hour 45 minutes — 40%
This paper is in three parts:
• Part I — multiple-choice questions.
• Part II — short-answer questions.
• Part III — scenario questions.
The specification content for this paper covers the Factors Affecting Participation
and Performance and is divided into three sections:
A - Exercise and Training.
B - Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Physical Activity and Sport.
C - Applied Anatomy and Physiology.
Paper 2: Practical activities: 60%
Candidates will be required to offer four activities for assessment and to complete
an Analysis of Performance in one of these activities.

Module 1 (Written paper, 40% of total AS mark)
Physiological and Psychological Factors which Improve Performance.
Module 2 (Written paper, 30% of total AS mark)
Socio-Cultural and Historical Effects on Participation in Physical Activity
and their Influence on Performance.
Module 3 (Coursework, 30% of total AS mark) total AS marks
Analysis and Improvement of Performance.
Part 1 - Application of theory through planning, performing and
evaluating an exercise training programme.
AND
Part 2 - Identifying strengths and/or weaknesses through either
practical demonstrations of skills or a written investigation.
A2 Modules:
Module 4 (Written paper, 15% of total A Level mark)
Physiological, Biomechanical and Psychological Factors which
Optimise Performance.
Module 5 (Written paper, 17.5% of total A Level mark) Unit 5 Written Unit 1½ hours
Section A Factors Affecting the Nature and Development of
Elite Performance.
AND
Section B Synoptic Assessment.
Module 6 (Coursework, 17.5% of total A Level mark)
Analysis & Critical Evaluation of Factors which Optimise Performance.
Application of knowledge through practical demonstration of skills. OR
a written project investigation (7½% + 2½% synoptic).

Synoptic Assignment (Externally-Assessed).
