Classical Civilisation at GCSE

Classical Civilisation is ideal for anyone who, after three years of Latin, feels that they cannot progress further with the language but would like to continue to learn about the Ancient World. It is also suitable for anyone new to the school who has not had the chance previously to study traditional Classics.

The course is a varied one in which literature and social history are studied, both Greek and Roman, but with no language component. Greek epic poetry and tragedy form the literature component, while the social history of Rome is studied as well as the rudiments of archaeological discovery and the application of its evidence in a detailed analysis of the remains at Pompeii.

The course is readily accessible for all abilities and no previous knowledge is required. Results are good and in 2006 one of our pupils was judged in the top five candidates nationally.
