Senior House Girls

English Department

English is a subject for life and at DHS we aim to equip girls with the skills of analysis and self-expression we all need to enhance our everyday lives.

The English department consists of four specialist teachers based in dedicated rooms. We create a stimulating classroom environment where the girls are able to enjoy their studies as well as developing their creativity and confidence in speech, in writing and in thinking.

The development of a lifelong love of literature and an appreciation of our cultural heritage is important to us and our extra-curricular activities support this aim creatively. Competitions which include debating, Lit quizzes and our annual Poetry Slam are always popular. Reading groups are available for all year groups, encouraging informal discussion of popular fiction as well as the classics. Naturally we do these things properly - over juice and cookies!

We have close links with the Drama department, organising joint theatre trips to enhance the study of a set text or to gain different theatrical experiences and we support the many drama opportunities and productions at DHS.
