Senior House Girls

History at Key Stage 3

Year 7

John of EnglandWe study the history of England and, later, the UK from 1066 to 1750, covering everything from the Battle of Hastings to life for peasants. We even create our own medieval village and see whether the characters can survive the winter.

Year 8

Spinning JennyWe study Britain 1750 – 1900 and over indulge on revolutions – the Agricultural, the Industrial and the French. We also look at the life of slaves and make interesting comparisons between working life in Britain in the 19th century and the life of slaves on the plantations.

Year 9

We look at the 20th century world – in particular the impact of hot and cold war on politics, technology and daily life. We do detailed work on trench warfare in the First World War and the Holocaust in the Second World War.

Throughout Key Stage 3 we seek to draw out key themes and links between topics. This helps to make History directly relevant to the girls. Such themes include: Civil Rights; Legitimate Power; Technological Advancement.

Girls are encouraged to discuss their viewpoints and many opportunities for wider reading and project work are available in conjunction with the school’s excellent library facilities.
