Maths at GCSE

GCSE Mathematics has undergone many changes over recent years. Most notably the course has gone from three tiers of entry to two tiers of entry (Foundation and Higher) in order to bring it in line with all the other GCSE subjects and the coursework element has been completely removed, focusing 100% assessment on the two final examinations taken in the summer of Year 11. Most recently, the new specification for 2010 introduces an imbedded Functional Skills element where pupils are expected to apply their mathematical knowledge in real life situations.

The Departments aim is to enter every girl for the Higher examination and to prepare them to obtain one of the highest grades. This process starts when they join the School where they are immediately introduced to GCSE standard questions and tested regularly to identify areas for development. Typically, 60% of girls obtain a grade A or A*. That said, for a small number of girls it is more appropriate to enter them for the Foundation examination and typically these girls are awarded a grade C. Additional one to one support is available should the Department or parents feel it necessary.

The Department follows the Edexcel linear course, which is assessed at the end of Year11 by two examination papers, one non-calculator and one calculator, both lasting 1 hour 45 minutes for the Higher course and 1 hour 30 minutes for the Foundation. As with Year 9, lessons are organised as 2 double and 1 single period and it is expected that class teachers will take their Year 10 set into Year 11 to maintain continuity.

The syllabus is broken down into three assessment areas. They are:

GCSE Maths Syllabus
A01 Recall and use knowledge of the prescribed content 45-55%
A02 Select and apply mathematical methods in a range of contexts 25-5%
A03 Interpret and analyse problems and generate strategies to solve them 25-30%

All topic areas, Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measures, Statistics and Probability are taught within each of these assessment areas. A full specification can be found on the Edexcel website (www.edexcel.com) by following the GCSE Mathematics Linear links.

In January of Year 11 the girls will sit a mock examination after which, a detailed programme of revision is undertaken to ensure that every girl is able to fulfill her potential in the summer examinations. Over recent years the girls have enjoyed considerable success with typically 100% pass rate (A* - C).

As in KS3, the most able girls are entered for the National Mathematics Challenge and other competitions or events are encouraged.
