DHSfG Sports Academy
At DHS we are developing our Sports Academy which is a programme to develop and support excellence in Sport. The Academy has several aims:
- To enable all girls to reach their potential in sport and academic studies.
- To support girls who are currently excelling in sport either as a performer, coach or official.
- To attract girls who excel in sport to DHS.
- To offer coaching programmes enabling all girls to receive expert coaching in a range of sports.
- To identify talents and ensure girls have the opportunity to develop them within school and are supported to access appropriate coaching and clubs through National Governing Bodies of Sport.
At DHS we have a number of girls who excel in sport outside of school. Through our Sports Academy we offer a support package in school to enable these talented athletes to excel not only in their sport but also reach their full potential academically.
If girls are:
- Performing at a Regional or National level in their Sport or are part of the World Class programme.
- Training and competing in their sport over 15 hours per week.
- Participating in regular competition in the UK and abroad.
- Finding they have many clashes with school work, sport and family / social life. This may result in teachers or coaches feeling an individual is not giving 100% effort or not meeting deadlines.
Any girl who meets the above criteria or is striving to achieve the above will be able to access a JUNIOR ATHLETE MENTOR in school. Please see Mrs Rochester if you would like to discuss Mentor support.
A Junior Athlete Mentor will:
- Be a member of staff who will work closely with individual girls. This is usually a member of the PE Department but does not have to be.
- Meet regularly with the athlete to plan ahead ensuring no ‘clashes’ and problems will arise.
- Liaise with parents, other staff in school and the coach to ensure the athlete can achieve in all areas as easily as possible.
- Negotiate a flexible timetable or help organise school work with other members of staff if the athlete needs to miss school for competitions.
- Support the athlete in any area they may need help with.
