National Schools Regional Tournament

Runners-up January 22nd and 23rd, 2011 in Newcastle.

Durham High School for Girls represented Durham County at the Regional round of the National Schools Competition, which was held at Blue Flames in Newcastle.

The Under 14 team played on Saturday and the Under 19 team played on Sunday.  It was an early start for both squads as the tournament started at 10am.

Each region of the North East (there are 4 – Northumbria, Tyneside, County Durham and Teesside) has 2 school teams as their representatives and these were decided at an earlier County round; a tournament held in October. The top two teams from each County progressed through to the Regionals.

The Regional round has been eagerly awaited as the winners and runners-up of the tournament go through to represent the North-East at the National Schools Finals. These are to be held in Southampton this year!

Under 14 team

The Under 14 team played 6 matches, winning 4 and losing 2. They scored 21 points which was enough to secure 2nd place! Central Newcastle was 1st and Church High School 3rd.

This 2nd place means they are representing the North East at the Finals in March.  An excellent achievement.

The Under 14 team included Lauren McMillan (captain), Nicola Tweedy, Brogan Woodward, Charlotte Marsden, Georgia Halliday, Holly Mitchell, Fan Whitfield, Kate Golightly, Rowan Rochester and Georgia McMillan. The team worked excellently, defending well and putting into practice tactics and strategies which they have practised over the weeks. There was some outstanding shooting from Georgia and Lauren as well as some key interceptions from the defence. The girls worked hard to ensure their centre passes were effective and that they dominated the centre third, despite a shaky start against CNHS!!

All the hard work has paid off and now they have the excitement of preparing for a very prestigious tournament and you have the honour of being one of the 18 finalists out of hundreds and hundreds of schools that enter!!!! CONGRATULATIONS a National Schools Finals Tournament is a great achievement.

Under 19 team

The Under 19 played some excellent games against well practised teams. Their overall position was a creditable 4th. RGS came 1st, Church High 2nd and Duchess were 3rd.

Their results were as folows:
DHS vs RGS Lost 3 – 14
DHS vs Church High Lost 5 – 10
Dhs vs Duchess Lost 7 – 8
DHS vs Cramlington Won 9 – 4
Dhs vs Carmel Won 6 – 5

The Under 19 team included Harriet Eggleston (captain), Gaby McConnel, Micha McNeil, Hannah Parker-Fuller, Anna Connaughton-Cartwright, Lucy Amos, Caroline Anderson, Anna Heslop, Priyanka Viramgama, Phoebe Parker and Laura Watson. This squad included girls from years 10, 11, 12 and 13 giving an excellent opportunity for those girls selected for the County to compete at a Regional level and gain experience for future years.
