Senior House Girls

PE and Sport Department

Senior girls playing NetballWelcome to PE and Sport at Durham High School. At Durham High School, all our girls are encouraged to participate fully in Physical Education and Sport. Within each key stage, the programmes are carefully designed to ensure there are sports which everyone will enjoy and allow all girls to develop a range of skills. These include team sports, individual sports, movement and fitness.

Many of our girls enjoy participating in our broad ranging extra curricular programme which takes place at lunchtime and after school. Clubs include netball, hockey, aerobics, dance, volleyball, badminton, football, rugby, cricket, skiing, fitness, cheerleading and gymnastics in the winter with the addition of tennis, rounders and athletics in the summer.  We have a busy fixture list providing regular competition for our squads in friendly fixtures, local and regional leagues and national competitions.

Nurturing and developing sporting talent is very important to us at Durham High School. We believe that girls can achieve their full potential both in their sport and academic studies and with the support of the DHS Sports Academy our individuals are excelling in all areas.

Importantly, we have strong links with local clubs and organisations for most of the sports we offer, enabling girls to participate further if they enjoy the activity.

We know that taking part in sport and physical exercise each day is important to improve your fitness, feel good about yourself, socialise, develop new skills and relax while having fun during our busy days at DHS.

The main aims of PE and Sport at DHS are:

  • To provide all girls ages 3 to 18 with the knowledge of, and the opportunity to participate in, Physical Education and Sport.
  • To ensure that each individual achieves her potential.
  • To become renowned for developing and supporting excellence in PE and Sport.
  • To provide all girls with the skills and opportunities to become Sports Leaders and volunteers.
  • To enjoy being physically active within a friendly, caring community where every individual is valued, leading to life-long participation in sport and physical activity.
