Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation is a good choice for a student who enjoys literature or history and who has an interest in the Ancient World. It is not necessary to have taken the subject at GCSE to enter the A Level course. It is, therefore, a possibility for students coming to DHS for Sixth Form.

The literature of Greece and Rome is read in translation across the two years of the course, with modules on epic, tragedy and comedy. The position of women in ancient society forms a fascinating study, and sometimes a salutary comparison, for a 21st century teenager. Philosophy, too, is covered in a detailed examination of the influence of Socrates and the works of Plato.

Classical Civilisation is a well recognised degree course which is very attractive to undergraduates. Several of our former pupils are currently studying it at university and thoroughly enjoying the experience. As with our more traditional Latin and Greek A Levels, we aim in Classical Civilisation to provide a rich and varied programme both in the classroom and in the wide range of extra-curricular activities available to our students.
