| What will I study? |
The subject matter of the course includes Atomic Structure, Bonding and Structure, Thermochemistry, Rates of Reaction, Organic Chemistry, the Periodic Table, Equilibria, and Electrochemistry. Wherever possible, the theoretical work is supported by practical work in the laboratory, usually a double period a week. |

| Do I need any particular skills or background knowledge? |
At least grade B at GCSE in Chemistry or Dual Award Science is desirable. The course develops at greater depth some of the topics which have been touched upon only superficially in the GCSE course. Most students find this both challenging and stimulating, and derive much benefit from the intellectual demands made on them in developing their powers of thought. |

| How will I be examined? |
The course is divided into two parts: -
Advanced Subsidiary (AS) |
- 50% of the total award |
A2 |
- 50% of the total award |
The course is modular with each part consisting of three modules. The AS part of the course will be examined in the Summer of the first year of the course, and the A2 part in the Summer of the second year of the course. Practical is assessed throughout the course and will contribute 12.5% to the total final result. There will be a synoptic element in the final examination at the end of the second year. It will be possible to re-sit each module, although in practice, this will probably be limited to one or two modules.

| Will the subject go with other subjects I am taking? |
Chemistry can be studied with Biology, Physics and Mathematics for those requiring a pure science qualification. It can also be combined with other subjects. In recent years, Chemistry has been studied alongside Art, Economics, English, French, Geography, History, Latin, and Textiles. |

| What Higher Education courses are available? |
The course aims to provide a good preparation for future studies at university level in many different fields. As well as single subject courses in Chemistry, there are also many combinations such as Chemistry with Biology, Physics, Engineering, Food Science, Business Studies and Languages, to name but a few. Chemistry is also, of course, a necessary qualification for candidates wishing to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, for which high grades are nearly always required. |

| How useful will this subject be for me? |
The importance of Chemistry cannot be overestimated in today’s world, and it has often been described as the central science. Indeed, there are very many opportunities in the world of industry, commerce, or education, for people with a Chemistry qualification. |
