Mathematics

Mathematics is a popular choice at A level with around 15 girls taking the full A2. In addition, interest in Further Mathematics is growing where typically 3 – 5 girls will take Further Mathematics as a forth A Level.

The award of A Level mathematics is made upon the completion of 6 modules. Three will be covered in each of Year 12 and Year 13. Each module is assessed with a 1 ½  hour exam, taken in the summer at the end of each year respectively.

There is no coursework in A Level mathematics.

A Level Mathematics

Year 12

(8 lessons per week)

In Year 12 the three modules covered will consists of,

Core 1   
Algebra. Surds and indices, quadratics, co-ordinate geometry, calculus
   
Core 2  
Algebra. more calculus, trigonometry, sequences and series
   
Statistics 1
Summarising data, probability, the Normal distribution

The syllabus will be covered by the use of two text books, with software and web support.

These three modules combine to make an AS award.

 

Year 13

(8 lessons per week)

In Year 13 a further  3 modules will be covered,

Core 3
Algebra. more calculus, more trigonometry, exponential and log functions
   
Core 4
Algebra.  more calculus, partial fractions, vectors

And a choice of one from,

Mechanics 1
Vectors, kinematics, moments
   
Statistics 2
Binomial distribution, Poison distribution, continuous random variables, hypothesis tests

Again, these three modules will be covered by the use of two text books, with software and web support.

With the three AS modules, these will combine to create a full A level in Mathematics.
