Musical learning

The pupils have great fun playing a wide range of percussion instruments and singing a variety of songs from different cultures and eras. In Key Stage 2, they have additional music teaching. Year 3 all play violins, Year 4 learn the recorder, Year 5 learn brass instruments and Year 6 have a particular focus on developing their singing skills.

Through the year, pupils have many opportunities to perform. There are many school-based concerts and the Prep Choir also perform at Durham Cathedral. As well as the choir, there is a Junior House orchestra – Partenza – which has involved string, woodwind, brass, keyboard and percussion players from Year 2 up to Year 6.

There is a great emphasis on enjoyment as well as the involvement of all abilities in Durham High music making, yet this is achieved at the same time as producing a very high quality of performance.
