Happy December! It is fantastic to be into our festive calendar, with various concerts and performances, Christmas Lunch and more taking place over the next couple of weeks, in the build up to the end of term.
I look forward to watching all of Pre-Prep and Prep take to the stage next week, with performances starting on Monday afternoon. Our girls never fail to amaze me with their confidence and talents, from clear and articulate speaking to their beautiful singing. I am sure that we are all in for a treat. Next week will also see our Christmas Concert in the Senior Department. It is always a very popular event and always gets me feeling very Christmassy!
I continue to welcome girls from Senior Department to sign the Excellence Book. The Excellence Book is a prestigious part of our 140-year heritage and celebrates outstanding academic achievements or contributions to school life. Dhian, Malisha and Oriana met with Mrs Hill this week to sign it.
Dhian and Oriana were nominated for writing and delivering lovely speeches at our Open Day. Malisha was nominated for her Speaking and Listening assessed speech in English. She spoke about her love of football and her speech included some particularly vivid description. Well done to them and the girls that have signed the Excellence Book this term.
Sixth Form girls have requested that we carry out some fundraising for much need humanitarian aid for those in our world who need it most. They wish to support the World Food Programme. The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity, for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. We have arranged a JustGiving page for you to be able to make a donation here. The Sixth Form would be very appreciative of any donation you feel able to make.

Senior Department Christmas Concert
You are welcome to join us for mulled wine and mince pies on Wednesday 6 December at our Senior Department Christmas Concert. The concert starts at 7pm in the Main Hall, and always promises to be a wonderfully festive occasion. Very limited tickets can still be purchased through School Gateway at the cost of £4 for adults and £1 for children/concessions. We hope to see you there.
Congratulations to our U15 Hockey team on their 1-1 draw against Dame Allans on Tuesday. The team created plenty of chances and it was an exciting end to end game. Outstanding performances from Emily and Charlotte.
On Wednesday the U12 Football team demonstrated incredible resilience in horrible conditions at the Tyne and Wear Tournament. Their performance during the evening was a brilliant example of the progress the team has made since the start of the season. Players of the tournament, Zoe and Esme.
The Independent Schools Council’s (ISC) annual Partnerships Week highlights the many beneficial partnerships between independent and state schools throughout the country. We are marking the week by putting the spotlight on our popular after school club Science Sparks.
Every Autumn term, Durham High School opens its doors each week to Year 5 and 6 pupils from partnership schools across County Durham to inspire and teach those who love science and just want to have some fun with it. Thank you to our Head of Science and Chemistry, Mrs Flavell, who leads these fascinating sessions, which include fire writing, Lego technic and making slime.
Carols around the Tree
You are welcome to join us, and the Parents and Friends, on Friday 15 December at 3.15pm for a mince pie and an opportunity to sing some of our favourite Christmas carols with our Prep Choir.
Walk and Talk
With school life jam-packed and busy, especially for those studying hard for their GCSEs and A Levels, it’s important that our girls get chance to take time away from the classrooms and find a sense of peace and tranquillity in the great outdoors. A group of Year 11 and 12 girls paid a visit to the heartening ‘Willow Miner’ sculpture in the beautiful setting of Low Burnhall on Wednesday as part of a ‘Walk and Talk’ activity to promote emotional and physical wellbeing.
We were delighted to have received acknowledgement from fundraisers at the Royal British Legion for our efforts during the recent Poppy Appeal. As a school, we raised £170.93 which will help to make a real difference to those in the Armed Forces community. A huge thank you to staff, pupils and parents for their generous donations.
