A huge well done to Sophie, who recently won the Academic Achievement award at the Sunderland Young Achievers’ Awards.

The awards, which are organised by Together for Children, recognise and celebrate the talent, bravery and positive contribution young people across the city have made to the lives of their peers, families and communities.

Sophie, who started Durham High School in Year 7 last September, came out on top in the 8-13 years category, after being nominated by her Primary school Headteacher Emma Monaghan.

As part of the virtual ceremony, Mrs Monaghan said: “At Gillas Lane, we teach our children to be resilient and tell them to never give up. Sophie embodies this vision and is such an inspiration to our children.”

Speaking after receiving the award, Sophie said: “I was so overjoyed when I found out that I had been nominated for this award and I am so grateful for all of the help that I have had from everyone to get me where I am today.”
