We continue to have great success in the City competitions and challenge across a range of sports at County and Regional level and in National finals.
City Champions: Netball (all years), Rounders, Athletics and Tennis
National Finalists: U14 National Schools Netball Finalists
Regional Finals - the U14, U16 and U19 Durham High School Teams all won their County Tournaments, ensuring qualification for the Regional Finals in January.
The DHS U14 Netball squad won the regional final in January, playing against the top 7 teams in the North East: Newcastle High School, RGS, Carmel, High Tunstall, King Edwards VI, Whitburn and St. Benet Biscop. They then went on to represent the North East at the National Finals.
The U16 and U19s also competed in the Regional Finals, playing against the top eight schools in the North East. Both teams played well against extremely tough competition with the U16s finishing in a respectable 4th place on goal difference and the U19s in 6th place.
National Finals - In March, a team of Year 8 and Year 9 girls competed in the U14 National Schools Netball Finals in Hertfordshire against the top 18 schools in England. Their preparation was excellent and they trained with determination in the lead up to the competition. The U14 section was divided into two, resulting in the squad playing eight teams. The competition was of an extremely high standard and the team faced tough competition playing both the eventual winners and runners-up. Our girls worked with focus and displayed an excellent level of skill throughout the day. They won two of their matches and narrowly missed out to others by a few goals. This was a good result for a North East team and placed them overall 15th in the competition.
Following their success in the Durham City Netball League (Durham High won all City Netball Leagues, in all age groups), Durham High was invited to represent Durham City at the Year7, Year 8 and Year 9 combined Level 3 School Games at Maiden Castle. The girls played schools representing Easington, Derwentside, Sedgefield, Chester-le-Street and Wear Valley and Teesdale. Both our teams gave a fantastic display of netball, winning all their matches convincingly to finish as tournament winners in both age groups.
Regional Finals - In the Winter Term our U16 hockey team travelled to Pocklington School to play in the National Schools North Hockey Semi-Finals. When the team met Wakefield Girls High School and Teesside High School in the pool matches, the girls played some fantastic hockey, including excellent defensive play and goalkeeping from Jenny Thompson. Having progressed to the playoffs, the girls continued to excel in torrential rain, with outstanding performances from Olivia Shaw and Sophie Sobo. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and the team conceded to Newcastle High.
The U14 hockey team were also in action in the National Schools North Hockey Semi-Finals, travelling to Leeds University for the competition. The team met Hymers College and The Grammar School at Leeds in the pool matches and played some exceptional hockey with star performances from captain, Anna Brown, as well as from Penny Oliver and goalkeeper, Pav Kaur. The team finished 6th overall.
Jazmine Moss represented England in the 200m at the Welsh Athletics International on 12th July. She also ran at the English Schools Finals in the 200m. Jazmine finished her final in a personal best time of 24.36secs to win a Bronze medal, meaning she is 3rd in the country!
Georgia Hewison and her partner represented Great Britain in Liverpool at the British Acro Championships and finished with a silver medal. As runners-up they were then selected to go to Portugal, for the Lisbon Acro Cup.
