Today, we continue that legacy by embracing a more inclusive future. Boys were previously welcomed until the age of 7¾, before the school became fully single-sex in 1993. From September 2025, we are proud to return to our co-educational roots—welcoming boys back and enabling girls and boys to learn side by side.

As an all-through school, educating pupils from Nursery to Sixth Form on one site, Durham High fosters a strong sense of continuity and family. Visitors often comment on the warm, welcoming atmosphere that defines our community.

Every pupil is known, valued and encouraged to be their best. Outstanding pastoral care, built on mutual respect and inclusivity, ensures our pupils feel safe, supported and confident to thrive both academically and personally.

We are proud of our reputation for academic excellence, and were honoured to be named Independent School of the Year, North East 2025. Our pupils embrace learning with enthusiasm, supported by dedicated, expert staff and small class sizes that allow for individual attention and encouragement. Here, it’s ‘cool’ to try hard and to achieve—and our pupils do.

Beyond the classroom, a vibrant co-curricular programme offers opportunities in music, sport, drama, leadership and more—encouraging resilience, creativity and personal growth. Pupils are supported to step out of their comfort zones and try new things.

We celebrate diversity and welcome families of all faiths and none. Rooted in Christian values, we are committed to fostering a strong moral and spiritual foundation, while also embracing the traditions and celebrations of many cultures. In a rapidly changing world, we aim to equip our young people with the empathy, confidence and global outlook they need to succeed and make a positive impact.
