Durham High

Music in Junior House is taught by specialist music teachers immediately the girls start in Nursery. This ensures that every girl experiences high quality music teaching each week. The girls have great fun playing a wide range of percussion instruments and singing a variety of songs from different cultures and eras. In Key Stage 2, the girls have additional music teaching. Year 3 all play violins, Year 4 learn the recorder, Year 5 learn brass instruments and Year 6 girls have a particular focus on developing their singing skills.

Through the year, the girls have many opportunities to perform. There are many school-based concerts and the Junior Choir also perform at Durham Cathedral. As well as the choir, there is a Junior House orchestra – Partenza - which has involved string, woodwind, brass, keyboard and percussion players from Year 2 up to Year 6. There is a great emphasis on enjoyment as well as the involvement of all abilities in Durham High music making, yet this is achieved at the same time as producing a very high quality of performance.
